"On the night Marianna Sommers was born, a freak accident shattered her family. Even as she came into the world, her two sisters left it for heaven. She's spent her life making up for that loss, being to her family and their Indiana Amish community all that her sisters would have been. Her only dream: a simple life married to Aaron Zook, the one she's loved since childhood. Then her father says they are moving--to Montana, of all places! Of course it's to keep her younger siblings far from their oldest brother Levi, who left the Amish way of life, but the move will destroy Marianna's dream. She pleads to stay, to no avail. As Marianna leaves her home--and Aaron--she's sure her heart will never heal. But Montana holds surprises..."--P. [4] of cover.

Beside Still Waters has become a friend I didn't expect to like as much as I do and one that I look forward to returning to at the end of my busy day. The writing and conversations are simple and easily keep my attention even after a full day of work. The characters have an amazing ability to reach out and touch something in us that we may not have even known was there. I found myself crying when Marianna cried and in terror when her little brother gets hurt. I understood the longing to be organized and correct all the while longing for something more even as Marianna did. It was a relief to find out how Mem truly felt at the end of the book (about Mari). Tricia Goyer has indeed acquired another fan that will be looking for other works of art that she has produced. The characters are realistic, the events that run the storyline are believable, and the closer I come to the end, the more I miss my precious new friends in Beside Still Waters. Thank God for the blessing of peace, tranquility, enthusiasm, adventure and just a tiny bit of romantic suspense that were all experienced in this book that I would highly recommend to all.

It was a wonderful book! I could not put it down. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

I really enjoyed Beside Still Waters, and especially admired how the author showed the spiritual enlightening/awakening of her main character Marianna from a young woman who followed the conformity of her Amish sect in Indiana but never really knew God or had a personal relationship with Him until she moves with her family to a new Amish community in Montana, where she comes into contact with people who do have a personal relationship with Him,and she is awed by it. She is also amazed by how nice, friendly and caring the Englisch in the area are,and how close their relationships to the Amish there.

The book ends with a teaser for the second book in the series. Will Marianna go back to the Amish community in Indiana, and the cold dead method of worshipping God, and the Amish man Aaron Zook, who never courted her but took for granted that they would marry and has been building her a cabin,or will she choose to stay in Montana where she has witnessed the visible adoration of God and has come to know Him personally herself, and has strong feelings for the kind and attentive Englicher Ben. I actually like Ben much better, but know the problems a relationship with an Englischer could cause this family so I will have to read book 2 to see where the author takes this story.

This book has a lot of info about the Amish lifestyle and it is not all about God. However, God and the different ways different groups acknowledge Him are presented,so those who cannot tolerate any mention of Him and the Christian walk-BEWARE! For those of us who love to see growth in one's spiritual life, you will love this, and rejoice with Marianna.

Highly recommended for those who enjoy Amish-themed romances.
