Murielle and Mounir fall in love and have children, as so many couples do. Unlike other couples, however, they give over the control of their family by living with Mounir's rich adoptive father. It seems as if everything is going well, but underneath it all, Murielle is suffocating.

This movie reflect the life of many people.

Tahar Rahim and Niels Arestrep, stars of the award winning "A Prophet" (2009) are reunited and have somewhat similar relationships (old man and "surrogate" son in this exploration of male domination, too many children, clash of cultures, etc. etc. Added to the mix is Emillie Dequenne, Cannes Best Actress Award for the highly acclaimed "Rosetta." A spoiler from the film itself and another in the short library description somewhat spoiled it for me. Without them, perhaps I would have given the film another half star. Gotta' avoid those spoilers that are sometimes too available.

Joachim Lafosse’s riveting family drama uses tight spaces—interiors are often framed in such a way that people are confined to small squares of light—and a score of sorrowful choral pieces to heighten its sense of sad disconnect. Images of children happily at play clash jarringly with adults hurting one another while either overlooking Murielle’s deteriorating condition or, worse, blaming her for it. A devastating study of one woman’s unchecked descent into mental illness (the original French title translates as “To Lose Reason”) overlaid with delicate political overtones as family benefactor Dr. Pinget insists on equating foreign aid with foreign ownership. Harrowing.

Emilie Desquenne gives a wonderful performance of a woman sliding into deeply troubled psychiatric illness as she feels her desire for family life with her husband and children being thwarted by his emotional connection to and their financial dependence on his ever-present and manipulative adoptive father, leading to tragedy.

A very dark film overall - not suggested for those looking for relaxation or refuge for harsh reality. I couldn't help but think "birth control" management might have been a helpfull key. There was a lot of stress placed on the mother and there is a weird dynamic between the foster father and son which doesn't work for the married relationship.

Devastating and vivid portrayal of the downward spiral of postpartum depression. This would be suitable for a psyche class to watch and discuss.
