A generation gap has emerged between parents and their girls. Even in this age of helicopter parenting, the mothers and fathers of tomorrow's women have little idea what their daughters are up to sexually or how they feel about it. Drawing on in-depth interviews with over seventy young women and a wide range of psychologists, academics, and experts, journalist Peggy Orenstein pulls back the curtain on the hidden truths, hard lessons, and important possibilities of girls' sex lives in the modern world. While the media has focused -- often to sensational effect -- on the rise of casual sex and the prevalence of rape on campus, Orenstein brings more to the table. She examines the ways in which porn and all its sexual myths have seeped into young people's lives; what it means to be the "the perfect slut" and why many girls scorn virginity; the complicated terrain of hookup culture and the unfortunate realities surrounding assault.

Technology has transformed the landscape for teenagers, and their parents. A generation ago, parents would have more knowledge about their kids' activities---even if it was incomplete. With phones, social media, apps, and a porn-saturated internet, the partial glimpse that most parents used to have into their kids' social lives is gone. (My mom used to hear one side of each phone conversation I had. My daughter NEVER talks on the phone, so that---admittedly limited---window is gone.) In addition, the global quality of the web has all but eliminated the geographical differences in teenagers' experiences. No longer is the kid in the country less exposed to the influences that would impact the urban teenager. This book is, therefore, valuable in giving parents SOME insight into the world of our kids---even if every dynamic examined doesn't apply in your environment, it's helpful to know generally "how the wind is blowing."

Compellingly written, this book focuses on--you guessed it!--girls and sex, plus society's expectations of young women. It focused primarily on the college experience but also on sex ed in high schools. Very informative!

I loved this book - so insightful. While the book of course focuses on how young women interact with sex, this is a much more overarching topic and this book addresses where attitudes arise from and how we can foster a healthy attitude towards sex for both young women and men with the advent of the internet.

I picked this up in an effort to continue to educate myself on what the future holds as the father of two young girls, one is shortly to be entering the dreaded "teen" years. I learned a lot from this book and would highly recommend it to both parents and teens who are curious about what's happening in our society and the sex lives of young women. It offers many new perspectives on the sex lives of young adults and some insight into how to help guide the next generation to full and happy sex lives.
