Born to Run starts with two apparently unrelated events 50 years apart. The first is a chase scene on a roof in 1960 Cyprus which results in a man being tossed off the roof, apparently to his death. The second is the death of the Vice President of the United States of a heart attack while hunting alligators in Florida. The replacement nominee is lawyer Jack Swytek’s father. The junior Swytek is drawn into a web of blackmail and murder that rushes to a thrilling climax. Born to Run was my first exposure to this series and I don’t know that I will go back. The story was good enough and it isn’t necessary to read any other series instalments to get the back story. However, it just seemed like the novel covers well-worn thriller ground. I had the reason for the blackmail figured out long before it was revealed all in fairness I didn’t guess all the details. The series features a lawyer but writing a will was the extent of the legal activities in this entry. Also, Swytek compares poorly to thriller heroes such as Bob Lee Swagger, Mitch Rapp, or Jack Reacher who can generally outfight and/or outshoot their enemies when needed. Not bad but not great.
