Navigating the Complicated New Landscape
Oct 11, 2017mom2niamh rated this title 4 out of 5 stars
Technology has transformed the landscape for teenagers, and their parents. A generation ago, parents would have more knowledge about their kids' activities---even if it was incomplete. With phones, social media, apps, and a porn-saturated internet, the partial glimpse that most parents used to have into their kids' social lives is gone. (My mom used to hear one side of each phone conversation I had. My daughter NEVER talks on the phone, so that---admittedly limited---window is gone.) In addition, the global quality of the web has all but eliminated the geographical differences in teenagers' experiences. No longer is the kid in the country less exposed to the influences that would impact the urban teenager. This book is, therefore, valuable in giving parents SOME insight into the world of our kids---even if every dynamic examined doesn't apply in your environment, it's helpful to know generally "how the wind is blowing."
